The Kennedy family moved to Erinsborough from the country as a result of gossip spreading that Karl had killed one of his patients. His children - Malcolm, Libby and Billy - were initially upset by the move and took some time to settle in to a new community.
Dr Kennedy was named after Karl Marx by his father who has strong socialist ideas which aren’t shared by Karl. He was shocked to learn that the man who had brought him up was not actually his real father, and he had a biological father who was a eccentric sailor.
Karl’s bedside manner unfortunately does not extend to his three children and he is well known for his short temper and holding ‘family meetings’ to decide punishment for their disobedience.
Karl gave up his medical career temporarily, after realising that he had given Cheryl Stark a lethal injection immediately before her death. The inquest into her death showed that Karl had not been at fault but Cheryl’s son, Darren, still blamed him for the tragedy. Karl spent some time working for Malcolm’s handyman business before returning to the medical profession.
